Soldiers of the D-Day invasion
“Wild” Bill Guarnere parachuted into France on D-day, found himself lost behind enemy lines without a weapon, scattered from his unit. Later that day he learned that his brother had been killed in Italy, “Dunc” was his brother’s nickname. Later he got a tatto memorializing him. But on June 6th Bill fought Germans. “I killed a lotta people,” he said when I photographed him, “I killed a lotta Germans that day.” For his actions assaulting Crecourt Manner later that day Bill was awarded the Silver Star. In October he lost a leg at the Battle of the Bulge. I’m grateful I’ve had the chance to meet him and that he’s on the Cover of War Paint.
